Ralph was born March 4, 1941 in St. Cloud to James and Eleanor (Cater) Smith. He graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School in 1959 and worked on a farm in the Clearwater area until 1966 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Ralph was a “dozer operator” in Vietnam where he received a bronze star with valor for heroism. He was discharged in 1968 and then attended school in Buffalo, Minnesota for agriculture.
Ralph and his family moved to a farm north of Browerville in 1994, he worked at Trident in Motley and for neighboring farms, retiring in 2007 for health reasons. He loved to go dancing, visit with friends and neighbors, hunting raccoons and play cards. Ralph was a member of the creamery board in Annandale, Peace United Church and the American Legions in Clearwater and Long Prairie.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann of Browerville, their children, Heather (Dave) Rosenberg of Wheaton, Beth Smith of Waite Park, Katie Katterhagen of Sartell, Jennifer (Ethan) Hanes of Bertha, Cody Smith of Wadena; grandchildren, Andrew, Alexander, Kylie, Nicole, Mitchell; great grandchildren, Aurora and Nova; siblings, Roger Smith of St. Cloud, Mary Kirchenbauer of Clear Lake, Bill (Kathy) Smith of St. Cloud and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Eleanor and his faithful dog Bosco.
