Elsie Lavonne (Jorgensen) Smieja was born on December 3, 1918 to Jorgen and Emma (Nelson) Jorgensen in Kasson, Minnesota. She attended school until ninth grade and then worked as a waitress in Hutchinson, MN. One of her fondest memories was baking bread with her mom. On May 4, 1946, she married Robert Smieja, and they lived in Eagle Lake until they moved to their home on Thunder Lake where she loved to garden and take walks. She enjoyed visits from her sister Donna until Donna was confined to a nursing home. Donna’s daughter Diane and her husband Dennis spent their summer and fall weekends, and whenever possible in the winter, visiting Elsie. After her husband passed away, Elsie lived many years at the Sunrose Courts and then spent her remaining years at the Central Todd County Care Center, where she was very well cared for and very loved. She was a ray of sunshine to everyone she met and was often heard singing “You are my Sunshine.” Elise reminded residents and visitors alike that she had three sisters, four brothers and two cats – Muffin and Mittens. Elsie truly enjoyed her twice weekly coffee visits from her nephew Jerry. She will be perhaps most remembered for her beautiful hair. She never missed her standing Wednesday hair appointment or an opportunity to ask someone if her hair looked okay.
Elsie is survived by her sister Donna Gangelhoff and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert; parents, Jorgen and Emma Jorgenson; brothers, sisters, brothers-in law and sisters-in-law Lloyd, Lyle (Cathy), Delvin, Richard (Marlene), Leona (Orville) Swigert, Florence (August) Voss, and John Gangelhoff.
